This year has just flashed by, everything has gone so quickly!

It seems like only yesterday that we had the floods here in Louth, but that was way back in June. I remember last year’s Christmas shindig like it was yesterday, we had a good laugh (this year’s was abyssmal for me, I had a bad cold and didn’t go).

Good luck to everyone for 2008, I hope it goes well for you, health and wealth and all that jazz :)

I wasn’t going to write about this, but then something made me think twice. That was the bit that included my own nation with the ‘‘ line indicating what the US has become.

I knew a long time ago about London being Big Brother capital – you are photographed something like 30 times a day travelling through London. Surreptitiously. Or perhaps not even that, quite openly if you know where the cameras are…

The article, ““, really puts things into perspective. Having lived in the US for eleven years I always thought (and still do in a way) that it was a fair and free society. Sure, 9/11 changed a lot of things, and excesses of power are everywhere not just in the US or other Western societies. But it’s frightening to know that, as the author points out:

We now share the “Endemic” distinction with China, Russia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and the UK…

Great. The UK ranked with China. That’s like saying your girlfriend is as good looking as your friend’s pet pig.

What’s worse is that Romania of all places is well ranked in terms of privacy and surveillance, with Canada (slipping though) and Greece.

It does seem a bit unjust that those people who ran into and rescued victims of the 7/7 bombings have not been honoured by the people and government, doesn’t it? Sure, people who work their entire lives in science deserves recognition; those who work in the civil service deserve it too, but those who worked hard on the 7/7 bombings behind the scenes at desks are just as deserving as the first rescuers (civilians) – yet they are the only ones who received anything.

The Government needs to recognise that something is wrong here, and do something about it.

Moreover perhaps, Gordon Brown needs to live up to his pledge, as noted by The Times Online:

Brown made the pledge last July at the launch of a book he wrote on heroism, titled Britain’s Everyday Heroes. He said: “It is right that we look at how our honours system can recognise those in our emergency services and members of the public who showed such bravery and heroism in the face of the recent terrorist attacks.”

Seems to me that the honours system focuses on the armed services (which isn’t a bad thing) and those members of society who have high degrees and intelligence, rather than those who exhibit bravery and gallantry.

You really have to laugh at the rhetoric used by politicians – it never changes and yet while it seems so transparent and obviously vacant, it promises something almost tangible; this from the BBC:

Gordon Brown has used his New Year message to say 2008 will be a year of “real and serious changes” in the UK.

The prime minister said combating the threat posed by terrorism was crucial and there would be “measurable changes in public services” over the next year.

I hope that means he’s stepping down, calling an election, and the Conservative Party wins… :) Mind you, that being said, I would almost accept the BNP winning – they can’t mess things up more than Labour has done.

The “measurable changes in public services” bit, OMG. Does this mean we finally might have a week or two without the Government losing some of our private data? Or perhaps some decent changes for the public in the NHS? Maybe withdrawing our troops from foreign lands and spending that money on housing the homeless?

Nah… what a silly thought.

For a nation who has one of the stellar broadcasting conglomerates of the world (the for those that might be wondering) we have a shoddy record of actually producing any decent shows. Mostly they seem to be good comedy shows, half hours remedies for the daily grind, British humour that is dry, caustic and terribly witty.

Nothing to speak of regarding any decent dramas though. Oh sure, we have the one-offs. Cranford wasn’t bad, Prime Suspect shines – but let’s be honest, one or two a year have been piss poor, are the writers on holiday for eleven months? The Americans have taken TV shows to a high art, they dominate in a way that is stunning. Not that I’m complaining mind you, I love most of them: CSI, NCIS, The Unit, Boston Legal, House, and so on. Although Spooks is good, it only ran for 12 episodes (and I ask why, there’s plenty of material there!)

But why can’t the BBC seem to produce anything similar? Attenborough nature shows are all well and good, but you can’t really sell them for a massive amount around the world, at least in comparison to a decent 20-episode series that will continue for another few seasons… Eastenders, Strictly Come Dancing, these are english phenomenons which although they have American analogues, don’t appeal to all of us (I can’t stand either).

Is this something we Brits simply aren’t good at?

What a crying shame! , the one hope for a decent whack at democracy in Pakistan, cut down by an assassin who then blew himself up. What kind of twisted logic drives these religious zealots? Where is it written in the Koran that they should do this?

Intellectually speaking, if the now-President Musharraf does not declare a state of emergency he reveals himself to be a tyrant for his previous declaration a few weeks ago. Bhutto was, after all, just killed (along with 20 or so others) by a radical that he was trying to protect Pakistan from with his clampdown!

Silly me though, thinking that there might be a real democracy there for once… It seems Pakistan is doomed to become a battleground for muslim crazies believing in the cult of death.

Update, Dec. 28th: Now the Pakistan Interior Ministry is saying she wasn’t shot and her injuries came from her banging into something inside the vehicle (the sunroof); the PPP are saying that that is nonsense.

Hope you all had a great day! Good food, good company, booze, laughs, and all that jazz.

Funny thing though – yesterday I went out to get one or two more little bits, see if there was anything interesting in the shops. I got back home, found the electric bill and the gas bill laying on the matt. Great.

Happy Christmas, and oh yes, pay the gas and electric bills. Could they come at a more inconvenient time? No, I don’t think so…

What does the NHS actually do?

Do the Doctors just sit there playing with their computers, telling us how we should live but not actually try to cure anything?

I went to my local Doctor’s office this morning. I went because I’m sick as a dog. I explained that my throat feels like I’ve swallowed razor blades, I have a chest cough, I have a headache, I have lots of phlegm. She examined my throat, and said oh yes, you’re infected. The Doctor told me to get some rest, to take ibuprofen (which doesn’t do shit for me), and to gargle with salt water. She said she wasn’t going to prescribe antibiotics because she didn’t want me becoming resistant to them.

Didn’t want me becoming resistant to them?! The last time I took antibiotics was a year ago! How can I become resistant to them if I take them once a year?! I swear this is an end of year thing, they’re getting low on their finances, don’t want to be seen giving out prescriptions, and so play with patient’s lives.

Talking to my mum, her friend Sandy says that this thing is going round at the hospital, lots of people have it. Guess what they got? Oh yes, prescriptions for antibiotics… to make them better, as you do. Of course.

Having found an old copy of a CD I owned, I thought I would move it onto my ipod (as you do). Ok ok, so it’s a Mozart CD, nothing modern, but I did need something that could convert it, play it so I could see if it worked, and move it.

It’s pretty easy to use, straightforward, and doesn’t require a degree in computer studies (like many do). It also supports a lot of formats, like OGG, APE, WAV, AAC and so on, some of them are very old and nearly unsupported in many programs.

All in all not a bad program, and once you have converted the file, or ripped the file from a CD, you can play it to see how well it performed.

Thank God for that!

Now of course, we’ll have the chorus of middle Britain, most of whom probably don’t believe in God themselves, saying he’s unfit to be a national leader. Bullshit! It has NO bearing on whether or not that makes him a good potential Prime Minister or not.

I would rather he didn’t in fact, that way he’s not trying to proselytize us all and taking up his valuable time with speeches about how God helps him etc., has owned up and showed us that his time will be taken up with leading his party, and if elected, leading the nation, not praying and wishing for something that may or may not come.
