I always though, or perhaps that should be assumed, that the people (in the UK) vote for a person as Prime Minster. But rather, they vote for a party and the person that leads that party. If that person resigns/retires etc., then the party votes in a new person to lead.
Seems a bit unfair though, to my thinking. Seems to me that we should have more of a definite system like the Americans, where you have a Vice-President, a definate second who’ll take over if the first goes.
Today though, it seems Mr Brown has some contenders. Charles Clarke and Alan Milburn have created a website outlining their vision for the Labour party (differing somewhat from mine I have no doubt), with the popular press saying that they are putting up competition for the leadership of the Labour party against Mr Brown. I don’t see a problem with that. Why should he just waltz into office? And let’s not forget about David Miliband, a youthful replacement for the aging Mr Blair.
Here’s the opener to their vision, from their website 20 20 Vision (should that be 2020 Vision, when they next see any kind of significant power after the next election?):
Politics is about the future not the past. After ten years in office Labour needs a new vision and new policies if we are to successfully meet the future challenges faced by our country and the wider world. Winning future elections requires us to renew ourselves intellectually, politically and organisationally.
My my where have I heard that kind of waffle political rhetoric before? Oh that’s right, every other disgruntled politicians seeking the highest office in the land.
Good luck Mr Clarke, Mr Milburn, and Mr Miliband, I think you’re going to need it.
Ha! No-one in particular, I just need one ya know. I have a bit of a thick jacket right now, ...
And just WHOM are you sprucing up for? Huh huh? Sorry I haven't been by in a while, been ...
