Why is it that ending our lives is illegal?
Surely if we are masters of our own destiny, free to choose what job we apply for/take, free to choose where we live, who we live with, whether or not we have children (contraception, abortion), why is it illegal to kill ourselves?
This was brought about by Daniel James, the young man who travelled to Switzerland to commit suicide. His parents, who may have helped him, have been questioned by police, because assisting suicide in this country is illegal. Strange that, since he wasn’t in this country when he committed suicide, but I suppose that’s another story.
But again, what business is it of the state’s whether or not you take your own life? There are countless ways to do it easily and painlessly, so what is the state worried about? We have separation of state and church and have had that for many decades now, so what is the legal issue, why is this still illegal? It’s almost as if the state treats us as property and we are depriving it of something…
