This is a UK thing, but the last surviving member of the armed forces who served in the trenches in WW1 died recently. His name was Harry Patch.

Ok, rant mode on.

This seems very strange to say, but I think that France has done a more honourable thing that the UK, with respects to Mr Patch. They awarded him the Legion D’Honneur, a prestigious award, and not just the normal one – he got the Officer’s rank of it.

What did Britain give him? Well to be blunt, fuck all. I mean, even Belgium knighted him. Did any government lackey here suggest that this courageous man, regardless of whether he was terribly brave or not in the war, be awarded some British award? An MBE, an OBE, a CBE? We’re not talking about something that would have cost us as a state very much.

This is quintessentially what is wrong with our nation. We honour the people who give money to political parties, but not the people that do things. Oh I know, I know, a third or a half of our awards do go to deserving people, but this one person, Mr Patch, is one of those that should have had one. Even if it was to show soldiers that we honour our servicemen and women.

I could go on about this government etc., but it’s pointless, they don’t listen. To me at least, this old man who went through hell, should have had something important from us. God rest his soul.

Rant mode off.

Today I got up at 5:15am.

Not by choice I assure you but I was just awake and lying there thinking that now was the time to get up. By the time I’d put my sweats and t-shirt on, I then looked at the clock and realised how early it was, it was too late.

So when I was watching the Grand Prix today, I had a cat nap just afterwards. But, what is up with my sleep? I just can’t sleep regularly these days, I’m always getting up early, regardless of when I go to bed.

This is getting very annoying.

All this nonsense about Berlusconi surrounding himself with beautiful women. What a farce! Most of the men in the world are thinking to themselves, ‘Lucky bastard…’ and if we were the voting public, he would get voted in again. I dare say that still now, he’ll get voted back in.

He admits himself that he’s no saint, perhaps we should leave it at that and accept him for the man he is. Does it affect his job? Does it make him any less of an effective leader?

It’s so refreshing to see people speak for us, and be completely and utterly wrong.

Today we hear our non-elected leader Mr Brown come out with this nonsense:

“What the prime minister supports is Tony Blair’s candidature for the president of the European council if Tony Blair decides that that is what he would like to do and as and when such a position exists.

“I’m not sure I would characterise it [Kinnock's remarks] as an announcement. I don’t think it is any surprise that the Europe minister in this government has said that we would support Tony Blair as a candidate.”

Yes and that’s it exactly. Mr Brown supports. Not the country. We need to have a referendum on this. -Our- choice, Mr Brown, -ours-, not yours.

If anyone in the world believes the British people back our Prime Minister, the next election will see that reality come crashing down. Pity us, for our electoral system is screwed up. We vote in the party, not the person, so if a PM resigns or is forced out, we are stuck with whatever moron gets the job.

For some things of course, Mr Blair did a good job, far better than the person who stabbed him in his back (the current PM). But we as a people should vote in who we want to represent us in a European election.

For that matter – do we even get a vote in who is the European President?

I walked to work this morning and decided to take my iPod with me.

I had connected it to the winamp this morning and moved an album over, one which I own physically of course. On the way to work I turned it on and looked for a tune to play, only to find that my iPod had no music on it whatsoever! Nothing!

I have the photos on it that I had stored, but other than that, nothing!

So I wonder if anyone else has had this happen with winamp/iPod, and if there is anything I can do?

The US budget deficit has risen about $1 trillion for the first time.

$1 trillion! That’s an unbelievable large amount of money. I just can’t imagine that such a thing can ever be reversed.

What boggles the mind is that this amount is per year, so estimates of something similar for the next year, and so on. Where does all this money come from? Even assuming not all of it is borrowed and some is conjured up from some central bank (inflation), that’s hell of a lot of money coming from someplace.

It doesn’t look good, and doesn’t bode well for the US.

So Paddy was relaying to me last night that a friend (or relative, can’t remember, he’s related to everyone) of his had contracted swine flu.

That means Paddy will have it in no time since he gets everything whether he actually does or not, and then if he actually does he’ll pass it to all of us at work.

Sincerely hope not. Desperately hope it’s not bad as flu tends to affect me badly.

Here’s hoping.

After watching that marathon slog for the Wimbledon gold trophy, I still think that Federer wasn’t putting everything in. He didn’t seem as skilled or fine-tuned as he usually does. There were one or two points but it just seemed as though he was coasting.

I thought that Roddick was going to win there though, he nearly had Federer on the ropes, but it was just not meant to be.

So congrats Federer, 15 grand slam titles, hell of a tally, and fitting to win it with the greatest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon.
