I tend to think that computers are a great gift to humanity. Or at least, tended, past tense, to think that.
It hit me tonight that in fact, it’s the opposite. Mostly because I got three phone calls from someone I work with asking about how to fix a computer with some weird virus on it. He knew mostly how to fix it, just asking if he was right. So, one, the fact he knew how to fix it shows you how common they are, and two, that I’ve fixed them so many times I can’t county how many.
They take up so much of our time that we actually make them part of our lives. Point in fact, mobile phones – bloody electronic tethers and addiction dispensers. Apps are a mindless drip tube, they really stitched us up when some bright spark wondered just what you could do with a handheld phone. That being said, the iphone really is a marvel…
I bet if we stopped using computers, the amount of electricity we’d save would save the planet. Google’s electronic footprint alone could probably be detected by an alien civilisation on their homeworld. If we stopped using computers, maybe we’d talk to each other or go out a lot more, have more concerts and so on.
So, are they worth the hassle?
