Watched the Uruguay/France match tonight, and also caught a bit of the opener this afternoon, and I have to say that these vuvuzela horns are bloody annoying. To say they add to the atmosphere of the game may be true, in the flesh, but not on TV.

I wonder if the TV networks can introduce some kind of noise dampening when they broadcast to get rid of the sound of the horns? The opener this afternoon was louder, but then again it was South Africa playing, so it was to be expected.

My mum has a collection of coins from when she visited Europe when she was a kid, always been fascinated by them, all shapes and sizes from back then (18th century, haha). She used to buy the commemorative sets occasionally too, really nice coins.

The reason I’m saying this is because a friend of mine is listing his Man Utd 1999 Treble Winning Commemorative Coins, these are in mint condition, still in the original box, really unique, serial number and all. Not a bad price when you consider they’re mint, very collectible. Take a look for yourself: http://b it.ly/d7WgBx

We’re not used to this kind of cold!

After our nearly-white Christmas, we are now promised more snow. Although I love snow (it’s one of my first memories as a kid coming back from Kuwait), I have to say I don’t love the cold that comes with it. Unfortunately the weather here seems to favour ice and freezing temperatures rather than masses of snow.

Nevertheless, as you can see from the picture taken from then, we do get snow. I’ll upload some more tonight to my Flickr account. And that was thick for us, a couple of inches, so of course being Britons, it caused mayhem and brought the country to a standstill…

My feet are really beginning to feel a bit chilly right now!

Why is it that of all the organic food that is cheaper than normal food, it’s canned tomatoes? 35p for a can, yet some of the normal canned tomatoes are going for 60p+!

I can understand that growing things naturally, without fertilizers, additives, and so on, is going to be more expensive. Generally, I don’t buy them either. But tomatoes, of all things… And, I think, that’s the only thing organic that is cheaper.

After all the hype about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, our waiting, pre-ordering, and having to bite our lips about the now cut-throat prices places like Morrisons are charging (£26! can you believe that?!), tonight after only one day of operation, the servers are down.

The first night it could be forgiven that inviting friends into matches didn’t work, they introduced a patch after all. But the patch has now done this so hundreds of thousands of us can’t even join multiplayer? Come on Infinity Ward – this is what a testing period is for, didn’t you check all this?

parcel_art_kiss

I read an article on The Telegraph’s site tonight.

What a brilliant, inspiring bit of artwork they showcased. It’s all by an artist called Mark Khaisman who uses brown parcel tape on a perspex panel lit by light. He uses scenes from his favourite movies and how amazing they look! Really inspirational, something to make you think and admire.

I think if I had a house with a lit wall on it, I’d do something like it, or have something like it. I’m sure that to buy one of his pieces would be far beyond my meagure bank balance, but it would be worth it if I could afford it.

It just goes to show you how amazingly diverse art can be, and utterly original. Check out that link and see his pieces, they really are brilliant.

I had some bananas that were going the south side of their natural yellow colour, if you know what I mean. I hate throwing them away, so I found this recipe for banana nut bread, altered it, and here it is. It called for pecans, but I use almonds since they’re easier to get hold of, and cheaper.

  • 3 or 4 bananas, mushed
  • 8oz plain flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 4oz sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1oz almonds, flaked/broken
  • 3oz butter, melted
  • vanilla extract
  • salt

Turn the oven on to 190C, or 170C for fan ovens. Butter up a bread tin.

Put flour, sugar, pinch of salt, baking soda, cinnamon and a few drops of vanilla extract in a bowl. Pour in the egg, butter, mashed bananas and nuts. Mix together. Pour into the tin, put in oven for 40-50 minutes and voila!

I used to think I had a bit more of a classical art taste. The usual masters, very fine paintings and nearly photographic quality on the really good ones. But then I saw modern art, and I’m talking Van Gogh onwards I think, Picasso, Kandinsky etc.,

But to my eyes, something like this monstrosity – the Angel of the North – isn’t art. I think it’s ugly, I think it’s a waste of space. Moreover even, a waste of iron. Perhaps that kind of reaction is a good one though, at least I have one, positive or negative. Saying it’s an icon of England though, that really does irritate me. The Houses of Parliament, or Castle Howard, or the Gherkin, those are icons.

So what does make us attracted to one piece of art like me with paintings, but not to others? I mean, I like the classical Greek and Roman sculptures. I like the decorated churches of the high renaissance. But some modern and contemporary art just makes me think, what’s the point?

What a disappointing Grand Prix. Another one.

Lewis just is not having a good season, and it seems that Button and Barrichello are the ones who will battle it out in the last four races. I am happy for Barrichello though, he’s raced for a long time and it’s finally coming together for him.

But Lewis seems to be pushing too hard and it never goes right for him.

Having the week off I’m getting lots of work finished up and projects wrapped up for the autumn, mostly because I have new projects coming up and also because I want to refine a few things that I already have going.

After starting the Thesis Themes site I noticed a url pop up in the stats from Hootsuite, which I’d never heard of. I went there, got an account, upgraded, and voila I’m exploring the finely-tuned world of advanced twittering. What a wonderful website! Well put together, and way more information than you’d probably need, but useful nonetheless, kinda like Twitter in a way…

So I just wanted to say what a great site, keep up the good work Hootsuite!
