You know that a political party is in dire trouble when candidates for them are telling the media that the Prime Minister, their leader, is the worst the UK has ever had. Pretty harsh. Also true.

It’s also bad when cabinet ministers, those you would expect to back the PM to the hilt, are suggesting to the media that people vote for another party to stop another party from winning (Ed Balls, on voting for a Lib Dem candidate). Never mind voting for them, because they know they won’t get the vote…

Surprisingly for me, and I will only say this once, I think that Tony Blair is much smarter than I ever gave him credit for. I actually felt sorry for him for getting stabbed in the back and at the time thought he was a bit pathetic for not striking out. But really, he’s the smart one here. He must have seen the writing on the wall and went gracefully with a smile on his face. A cheesy one, but nevertheless, a knowing happy smile.

It’s so refreshing to see people speak for us, and be completely and utterly wrong.

Today we hear our non-elected leader Mr Brown come out with this nonsense:

“What the prime minister supports is Tony Blair’s candidature for the president of the European council if Tony Blair decides that that is what he would like to do and as and when such a position exists.

“I’m not sure I would characterise it [Kinnock's remarks] as an announcement. I don’t think it is any surprise that the Europe minister in this government has said that we would support Tony Blair as a candidate.”

Yes and that’s it exactly. Mr Brown supports. Not the country. We need to have a referendum on this. -Our- choice, Mr Brown, -ours-, not yours.

If anyone in the world believes the British people back our Prime Minister, the next election will see that reality come crashing down. Pity us, for our electoral system is screwed up. We vote in the party, not the person, so if a PM resigns or is forced out, we are stuck with whatever moron gets the job.

For some things of course, Mr Blair did a good job, far better than the person who stabbed him in his back (the current PM). But we as a people should vote in who we want to represent us in a European election.

For that matter – do we even get a vote in who is the European President?
