Germany 4 – England 1

It says it all. What a debacle. I love that word, but I don’t love the team.

I know I may be stepping on many toes, but for all that Rooney is built up to be, he’s shit as a striker, at least for England. If it’s a matter of supporting him properly, then the manager is doing a bad job. At Man Utd he seems to do well, but every time I see him play for England, he’s just not there.

And that disallowed goal, or really it wasn’t even that. That should change the rules if anything does. We need video playback, a fifth official to keep the ref informed of what really happened. That was a goal, no quibbling about it. No doubt Jerry will crow about them getting their own back after the ’66 final.

Terrible.

I read the BBC’s news site this evening and on there was an article about the German President backing plans for a new medal for their armed forces, but not the Iron Cross. Currently they have only four medals to express exceptional service.

From the German Defence Minister, Thomas Raabe:

“we are not thinking of bringing it back, though we do want to introduce a medal to honour soldiers who show courage”.

That’s a pity. I don’t think that the Iron Cross had any bad connotations or inherent evil-ness. It was an award with a great history, and a great deal of honour associated with it. Why not bring it back?
