I watched some video online the other day about how the BBC had sold the comedy ‘Allo ‘Allo to the Germans, who were translating it into german (of course). The problem they had was that in german a word is a word, so if there is something new they create the word based on what it means. A new word might be tank-that-spurts-flame for example, that’s how it would be said in german.
In english however, we have a rich history of double meaning words, and more in some cases. Words spring to mind like ‘route’, ‘right’, ‘saw’, ‘house’, ‘fire’, and so on. Verbs and nouns all mix depending on the context of the sentence.
That’s why tonight I had to have a laugh, I mean one of those childish things that just make you crack up. Firefox has the ‘Latest Headlines’ at the top of the page and occasionally I’ll click it to see what’s new, instead of actually browsing the news sites themselves. This one title made it all worth it:
Great tits cope well with warming.
ROTFL! I bet they do…
