So Paddy was relaying to me last night that a friend (or relative, can’t remember, he’s related to everyone) of his had contracted swine flu.

That means Paddy will have it in no time since he gets everything whether he actually does or not, and then if he actually does he’ll pass it to all of us at work.

Sincerely hope not. Desperately hope it’s not bad as flu tends to affect me badly.

Here’s hoping.

Being a rather rural area the people around here tend to have a very environmentally friendly outlook. With lots of farms, farmers, and so on, you would think that the general outlook here would be to take care of the environment, not pollute etc.,

Tonight, getting home from work, I see the local newspaper on the floor – the Louth Target. The first front page article is about the wind farm down the road in Conisholme. Here’s a few excerpts:

Completion brings the total number of turbines to 20, providing power to more than 13,000 homes – more than a quarter of all homes in East Lindsey.

Yay! So a quarter of the local council’s housing stock is powered through natural means.

There’s more, however:

East Lindsey District councillors granted approval more than two years ago but residents and environmental groups opposed the construction and joined forces with other groups against wind turbines in a countywide pressure group, Lincolnshire Opposed to Onshore Turbines.

They initially succeeded in persuading East Lindsey planning councillors to reject the turbines at Conisholme because of environmental impact on the character of the Marsh landscape, including Louth’s St James’ Church spire.

The thing is – Conisholme is miles away from Louth. It’s difficult to see them from the A16, and in Louth, nestled at the foot of the Wolds, is going to be absolutely unimpacted by a wind turbine farm.

More importantly though is the environmental impact. What impact? There are not protected bird sanctuaries here, it’s farmland, flat and lots of arable fields. It amazes me that people in this day and age are still so resistant to using natural elements for power rather than coal or gas.

Having written about it recently, about how snow was forecast, it actually arrived!

Yesterday was a bit of a disappointment after the weather programs telling us it would be here, I got up half expecting a covering of snow but nothing. So it was just another day really.

This morning however, I pulled back the curtains and nearly blinded myself, the white was that encompassing. As you can see from these pictures I took of the (once in a lifetime) event, the first one is out the back window looking at Louth church, quite a shot:

And out the front window, which was more amusing as when I took the picture, not two seconds after I heard the camera ‘click’ (cameraphone), a huge lump of snow fell from the roof into the front yard:

Out the back window again, you can just see next door neighbour’s clothes on the washing line that they’d left out, now covered in a thick dollop of snow. Serves ‘em right:

And the last one, a picture of my back patio, fully laden with snow, and showing it falling down just as it got thicker too. Love the whirlybird covered in the stuff, great pic:

So I know that it’s not up to Mac and Corey‘s standards (those Canadians will tell you less than two feet of snow is just a “light covering”) but for here, it’s a bloody miracle! Fitting really, considering it’s Easter …

Apparently, and notice I say that word apparently, we had an earthquake last night. And it was about oooh, 12 miles down the road where the epicentre was (Market Rasen). Not that I knew of course, because like most people at 1am I was fast asleep. And I can sleep through hurricanes, tornadoes etc., so a little earthquake really isn’t going to do much.

My brother said the house was shaking, my niece woke up screaming. Work-mates said they woke up or their spouses did, the bloody news has been talking non stop about it, all these people saying chimneys fell down, houses shook, and so on. Not here, at least not here for me.

So all in all, it was a pretty disappointing earthquake in the UK.

Not mine mind you, it’s a bit higher than many before me, but Paddy‘s (workmate at GRS) is right next to the river.

I got home, and saw it on the news, pictures of the Lud raging through Louth right next to houses and if we have a few more hours of rain I think we could be getting flooded again…
