This is something that I’m really surprised hasn’t been more of a market.

My mother uses this really old mobile phone, a simple Nokia with no frills, barely even a digital display and fairly large buttons (although not too large IMHO). She doesn’t need anything else, as it’s only for emergencies anyway. She can’t see well, and she’s not too tech savvy, so it’s perfect for her.

My father on the other hand, a bit more tech-savvy although still like comparing a four year old with a five year old. He at least knows he can get information on train/plane times on the internet and recently started asking me about phones that do this. He got a Nokia X6 the other day, but today he called me to say it was awful and he couldn’t get on with it.

So my question is, why haven’t these large mobile phone companies, with all their resources, made phones for the aging? Big buttons, less gadgets and stuff on them, perhaps more intelligent voice control or large video displays or at least bigger icons and text? There must be a market for it, as more and more people use mobiles phones on a daily basis, and generally speaking people don’t see as well when they get older, or hear as well etc.,

Smartphones are all the rage and to be hones with you, it’s a bloody good job they are smart, because without all that technology … I just would forget to recharge it! This thing beeps at me when it’s getting low on power.

Honestly though, can you think of a time before mobile phones? God what a horror that would be! Not being able to phone someone or even text someone when you wanted, or not having a camera with you at any time. These days of course, GPS and maps too.

So to all those people who took the plunge and bought massive bricks in the 80′s because it was cool, you know who you are, god bless you!

They tried a Blackberry but I looked on their site and found one much better, a Nokia E71. Great little phone, a little heavier than my other one, wider too, but lots of useful features for me.

I set up my gmail account on there in seconds, downloading via my wifi in a few more. Wandering around town it checks wifi spots and tries to connect if it can. God what terrible things these phones are becoming!

The time is rapidly approaching when my phone has to give up the ghost and I get a new one. Ok, so it’s just a year old but falling behind the times in this era of technological advancement. It seems there’s a new phone out every day, all hot and desirable. The iPhone for example, Keefe’s going to get one. Paddy just got a new touch screen Samsung (Tocco, I think or something like it).

Choices choices… I think I like the iPhone, but seriously disappointed with the pathetic 2Megapixel camera on it. I like having a nice high MP camera on my phone, useful for when you’re with family for example. So I think that leaves the iPhone out. So what’s left? Anyone got any ideas?
