I spent some ten years or more in the US. I lived there, absorbed nearly everything I could, and by far, their politics has to be one of the worst entertainment shows around. And it is just that, don’t kid yourself. There is no electing the best person for the office anymore, there is just electing the person who can get the most money during the run-up.
When they’re in office, it seems that Presidents tend to surround themselves with yes people. As if that ever helped anyone… But they do it nonetheless.
This particular post is directed at something I read today while browsing the various websites I frequent, Yahoo! News to be precise, and there was an article about the former White House Press Secretary. He’s just brought out a book, scathingly directed at his former boss – you can tell that Scott McLellan is a bit unhappy.
The short of it is that he says the President relied upon propaganda for the run-up to the Iraq war, and did nothing else. He didn’t tell the truth, and so on. Scott elaborates, but what caught my eye was this, by Karl Rove, the machiavellian puppetmaster behind the Bush Presidency:
Said former top aide Karl Rove, in an interview with Fox News Channel, “If he had these moral qualms, he should have spoken up about them. And frankly I don’t remember him speaking up about these things. I don’t remember a single word.”
Yes Karl, because people who stand up against their boss and possibly refuse to say what they’ve been told to say, generally keep their jobs, their pension, etc., How f***ing dumb do you think we are?
Scott wasn’t stupid, and clearly kept his mouth shut because he valued his job. Being a Press Secretary doesn’t carry as much clout as say, the National Security Advisor, or the CIA Directory, does it? Speaking out against these propagandistic speeches, and for telling the truth instead, would be like the little boy with a 10 decibel voice at the back of the class trying to be heard above the commotion of a food fight.
And besides, Karl, you were the hand up President Bush‘s arse – if someone had said that the steady stream of ‘Saddam has chemical trucks’, ‘He’ll nuke Israel’, ‘Trust me’, was plain ridiculous, seriously – what would you have done to him?
I sincerely hope that the American people choose someone next time with more than a few active brain cells, I really do.
