Sadly, it is illegal to help someone to commit suicide. I can see why of course, and Mr. Brown’s reasoning has some validity:

He told the head of the Catholic church in England and Wales he would not bring forward legislation that put pressure on people to end their lives.

However, I wonder if he has obtained any statistics from Switzerland about their suicides and assisted suicides? He stated his logic but has no proof to back it up – could we see this please, Mr. Brown?

I don’t see any legislation like this putting pressure on anyone but rather alleviating the pain and suffering of people who have little left but their dignity and woefully inadequate state-provided medications.

Like I said, I do see why the law exists, but it is neither fair to those who suffer and as many feel, archaic and a leftover of a more religiously-devout public. But, shouldn’t our representatives in parliament actually represent -us- and not their own feelings on this matter?

There is a debate going on here about assisted suicide. The CPS has declined to prosecute two parents who took their son to Switzerland to commit suicide. Declined to do so primarily because he was adamantly determined to take his life and they begged him not to, but he would do so anyway. Despite that reasoning, no-one has been prosecuted for it.

The recent round has been because tonight, there is a TV show on Sky showing someone doing just that, and showing the moment of his death. Hence the debate.

The Prime Minister, our idiot-in-chief, has not done anything about this and declines to do so. I honestly thought that MPs were supposed to do what we, the people, wanted them to do. Isn’t that the way democracy works? We elect them to represent us etc., Well everyone I talk to seems to believe it’s fair to let people commit suicide if they want, especially the terminally ill. So why aren’t our MPs doing something about it?

My question is this though: why does the government feel it has a right to decide how I meet my death? If I’m determined enough I could jump off a bridge, or jump in front of a train. But if I’m terminally ill, and can’t move, and in great pain and suffering, doctors can’t help me end my life. How insane is that? With our overcrowded island you would think the government would be happy to help!

Why is it that ending our lives is illegal?

Surely if we are masters of our own destiny, free to choose what job we apply for/take, free to choose where we live, who we live with, whether or not we have children (contraception, abortion), why is it illegal to kill ourselves?

This was brought about by Daniel James, the young man who travelled to Switzerland to commit suicide. His parents, who may have helped him, have been questioned by police, because assisting suicide in this country is illegal. Strange that, since he wasn’t in this country when he committed suicide, but I suppose that’s another story.

But again, what business is it of the state’s whether or not you take your own life? There are countless ways to do it easily and painlessly, so what is the state worried about? We have separation of state and church and have had that for many decades now, so what is the legal issue, why is this still illegal? It’s almost as if the state treats us as property and we are depriving it of something…
